I recently discovered Zola Jesus in October of last year when the singer-songwriter dropped her fifth studio album, Taiga. The critically acclaimed album, brings together synth, R&B and electronic elements. So ultimately I was excited when I heard that she had released a video for her new single, “Hunger”.
It’s a minimal artsy video from Nika Roza Danilova aka Zola Jesus, which features a quick cuts of the singer, as she swerves and sways, as if erratically contorting her slender body into countless poses. The camera spins around the singer dressed in black, sometimes panning out as she lies on the concreate floor of a desolate, warehouse-like set.
In a press release director Tsypin, known more commonly as BANGS, describes the video as “essentially a sculpture project…an exploration of a life form: both raw and refined. A negotiation between form and inner life, movement and stillness, desire and satiation. Working with Nika is always an honest and satisfying collaboration…it was really fun to interpret the song and Nika’s aesthetic sensibilities through film.”
You can watch “Hunger” below. Zola Jesus is currently on a North American tour, as has recently announced new European tour dates. “Hunger” single and B side were released February 10th. Taiga is out now.
