The Prism Prize is an award established to recognize the artistry of the modern music video in Canada. After watching hundreds of videos, a jury consisting of journalists, filmmakers, artists, and other members of the Canadian music and film industries voted for their favourite music video to win a Grand Prize of $5, 000.
With the Top 10 Best Canadian Music Videos of 2014 officially announced to the public, A Music Blog, Yea? were pleased when given the chance to interview the 2015 Prism Prize nominated filmmakers. In this interview, we speak with Kheaven Lewandowski — director of Fur Trade’s Same Temptation — to discuss their video’s highlights, favourite films, and dream collaborations. Read our interview below, and check out all of the other interviews here.
AMBY: Welcome to AMBY and congrats on being a Prism Prize nominee! Please explain to our readers how you first got into your industry.
Kheaven Lewandowski: I first got into making music videos while at art school in Vancouver. I met Steve Bays while doing party photography in 2010, and he let me shoot a couple Hot Hot Heat music videos. That was my first real break, and we’ve been working together ever since.
AMBY: What inspired the story/concept told in your nominated video?
Kheaven Lewandowski: The concept for the “Same Temptation” music video came from the infamous ‘Bat Boy’ photo from the 90’s tabloid Weekly World News. I thought it would be fun to do a sweet but twisted origin story of how that photo came to be. I took some details from the Bat Boy mythology, and made up the rest—like his blind best friend, and his alcoholic mother.
AMBY: What was one of the highlights you had while creating the video?
Kheaven Lewandowski: The highlight for me must have been seeing our Bat Boy (Cameron Andres) in full make up on the first day of shooting. Because we were so low budget, we couldn’t afford to do a full make up test before hand, so I had to put a lot of trust in our special FX make up artist, Dallas Harvey, in bringing the character to life. It was super stressful up to that point, because if the make up looked bad—so would the video.
AMBY: Which other videos or films have you been enjoying lately?
Kheaven Lewandowski: I just burned through The Jinx, which blew my mind. And the Polish film, Ida, was probably my favourite movie from last year.
AMBY: If you could work with any other musician to collaborate on a new video with, which would you choose?
Kheaven Lewandowski: I suppose it’d be Grimes or Drake—mostly cos I just love their music.
AMBY: Lastly, what’s something about you that nobody knows yet?
Kheaven Lewandowski: I’m a sucker for Katy Perry.
Thank you Kheaven Lewandowski, for giving us your answers!
