Back at Tattoo for a second round of shows, this one an all ages hip hop showcase. Due to early start times I ended up missing the first few artists, walking in during Claremont the Second’s performance. His demeanour was gracious and his lyrics were positive, flowing over the bass drum kicks and synth keys. Between sets a lady who I took to be the host of the evening went on about how good Claremont was considering he was only 17 and she had a point. GoldLink was announced and a DJ came on stage. Without saying anything he started banging some tunes, building the energy in the crowd until he grabbed the mic, “I’m done playing with ya’ll, here’s GoldLink”.
With a well thought out and wryly funny lyric style, he seemed totally at ease on the stage, cracking jokes in between songs and bouncing around constantly. His continuous movement made it seem like there were more people on the stage than there really were. The production by itself would have kept my attention; each track had a unique feel to it drawing influence from all over the place with some very recognizable samples. He sewed everything together like doctor Frankenstein and brought it all to life with his lightning raps. All in all a stellar performance that left the audience wanting more.
