We became a band a little over 2 years ago, but before that we were four separate musical entities. Lelia Broussard had released several albums as a solo artist, was a contestant on The Voice and was runner up in Rolling Stone’s cover competition. Hannah Winkler was teaching pre-school while recording and performing her own music in New York City. I (Bess Rogers) had also released solo albums and was also playing guitar and singing in Ingrid Michaelson’s band. Zach Jones was drumming for many of New York’s best artists, include our friends A Great Big World.
We were all friends and decided to book ourselves a tour of house concerts throughout the east coast. We rotated playing each other’s songs and serving as each other’s backing band, but people kept suggesting that we make a record together. After explaining over and over that we were solo artists and not a band, we decided we should give it a shot. As soon as the tour was over we started writing together, and it was immediately clear that the house concert audiences were right all along.
We recorded our album shortly after that in our home studio in Brooklyn. Now, 2 years later, we’ve released it on Cherrytree/Interscope, which is home to so many of our favorite artists. We’ve toured with Ingrid Michaelson, A Great Big World, Jukebox the Ghost, Marc Broussard, and we’ll be on tour this November with our label-mates, Marianas Trench. So much has happened for us in a short period of time, and we’ll always be grateful for the sweet house concert people who didn’t understand why we weren’t already band.
We want to extend a big thank you to Alicia and the team at A Music Blog Yea? for including us and to you for getting cozy with us!
